After a temporary closure, the Tioga Road in Yosemite National Park will reopen to the public at 3:00 p.m. today, Wednesday, December 07, 2011. The Tioga Road, the popular east-west crossing of the Sierra Nevada in the northern portion of the park, has been temporarily closed due a high wind event in the Yosemite area.

Winds up to 75 miles per hour were experienced at the higher elevations of the park, including along portions of the Tioga Road.  Wind in the area knocked over numerous trees and covered the Tioga Road with debris. Road crews and forestry crews worked throughout the weekend to clear the roadway for travel. No injuries were sustained and minimal structure damage was reported due to the event.
All roads within the Yosemite National Park are subject to temporary closures or chain control due to hazardous driving conditions. Visitors should be aware of the potential for icy spots along the higher elevations within the park. Tire chains may be required at any time during the fall and winter season. It is strongly recommended that all motorists carry
tire chains while driving in the park during the fall and winter months.

Hetch Hetchy Road in Yosemite National Park Reopens
Tioga Road Remains Closed Until Further Assessment

After a temporary closure, the Hetch Hetchy Road in Yosemite National Park has reopened to the public at 11:00 a.m. today, Friday, December 02, 2011. The Hetch Hetchy Road was temporarily closed on Wednesday, November 30 due to a high wind warning in the Yosemite area.  Several trees fell along the roadway during the event, causing blocked access to the Hetch Hetchy Dam and the Hetch Hetchy area.  Forestry crews were able to access the area this morning and clear the roadway of any remaining debris.

The Tioga Road, previously closed due to the high wind event, remains closed at this time.  The area experienced gusts of wind up to 75 miles per hour, causing dozens of trees to uproot and fall across the roadway. Forestry crews continue to work in the area to remove debris from the road. Work on the roadway and fallen trees will continue throughout the weekend
and an announcement will be made upon the opening of the Tioga Road.

The lake is now at 3347+/- which is as low as PG&E can legally go.  We
plan to keep it at this level as long as we can thru the winter and
early spring.  Weather systems will dictate how well we do.  FYI – we
just extended the Pines boat ramp to allow boat trailers to be able to
launch with the lake at this lowest level.

The Tioga Road (Highway 120 east of the Crane Flat Gas Station) and the Hetch Hetchy Road in Yosemite National Park will be temporarily closing tonight, Wednesday, November 30, 2011 at 8:00 p.m. A high wind warning has been issued for the Yosemite area starting tonight, through Friday morning, December 2, that may impact driving conditions along the roadway. The Tioga Road and the Hetch Hetchy Road will remain closed until further
assessments can be made. An announcement will be made pending additional road closure changes.

Winds are expected to be between 20 and 40 miles per hour, with localized gusts up to 60 miles per hour in Yosemite Valley. Winds at the higher elevations of the park are expected to be between 50 and 60 miles per hour with localized gusts in excess of 75 miles per hour. The strongest winds are expected in the area between 4:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. tomorrow,
December 1.

There is the potential for very strong damaging winds with down trees and power lines and potential structure damage throughout the park. Visitors are urged to use caution while in Yosemite National Park during this high wind warning.

Badger Pass Ski Area, operated by Delaware North Companies Parks & Resorts, offers the Oakhurst shuttle service running between Miller’s Mountain Sports located at 40343 Highway 41 and Badger Pass Ski Area on December 26 – 31, 2011, January 7, 14, 15, 21 and 28, 2012 and February 4, 11, 18, 19 and 25, 2012.

The ski shuttle’s scheduled departure time from Miller’s Mountain Sports is 7 a.m. The shuttle will make a routine pick-up at Tenaya Lodge at Yosemite at 8 a.m. en route to Badger Pass. The Oakhurst shuttle will arrive at Badger Pass Ski Area at approximately 9 a.m. The pick-up time from Badger Pass Ski Area will be at 3:30 p.m. with arrival at Tenaya Lodge at 4:30 p.m. and arrival at Miller’s Mountain Sports at 5:30 p.m. The Oakhurst shuttle service is $10 per person, round trip, which includes park entry through the south gate of Yosemite.

In addition to the Oakhurst shuttle, courtesy shuttle buses from Yosemite Valley to Badger Pass Ski Area are offered daily to make it convenient for guests to relax and enjoy a day of fun in the snow. From 10/22/11 through 11/19/11, PG&E will conduct construction activities at the Crane Valley Dam and Wishon Quarry on Saturdays in addition to Monday through Friday operations. Saturday work hours will be limited from 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Saturday Wishon Quarry operations will be limited to crushing, loading, and transporting rock only- no blasting activities will occur.

PG&E’s commitment to area residents is to finish the dam construction as quickly as possible. Construction on these Saturdays will help to avoid winter weather interruptions, which will facilitate completion of the downstream buttress foundation and will expedite rock placement on multiple sections of the dam.

Motorists should expect periodic traffic delays on Road 222 as you approach the Crane Valley Dam site. Signage along Road 222 will advise drivers of traffic delay and control measures. PG&E will have the appropriate traffic control staff and flagmen in place similar to controls during Monday through Friday operations during Wishon Quarry rock deliveries across Road 222.

Sadly, a tall, old Ponderosa pine in the Pines Village has died and requires removal. The tough part of that is, the Good Ol’ Daze building was constructed around the tree many years ago.

Yesterday and today a crew from Tip Top Tree has been working on the project right outside our office windows. Notice the splotch of orange midway up? That is Glenn York, tree climber extraordinaire.
